Karagwe Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT/KAD)

In the area of today's Karagwe Diocese (KAD), the EMDOA/Bethel Mission had been working since about 1914. The work was interrupted by the two European world wars. In 1979, the Karagwe Diocese became independent from the North-West Diocese.

The diocese has 126,277 members in 383 congregations, the number of staff includes 100 pastors, 205 evangelists and 453 other full-time staff. It is headed by Bishop Dr. Benson Bagonza.

To compensate for disadvantages in education, the church has a number of three Secondary schools, three Primary schools and one Vocational training centre for Youth. In Nkwenda, a diaconal school trains sisters who will later work in kindergartens in the congregations. Evangelists are trained in the Nkwenda Bible School. In addition to AIDS work, the diocese maintains the hospital in Nyakahanga, in cooperation with the government. The local population is cared for in a ramified network of health stations.
